Teens & High School Study Programs

2012 Teen Summer Programs

Studying a language in another country is probably one of the most influential experiences that a teenager can have. The world instantly is enlarged, and the teen comes home with a much greater appreciation for other cultures and other ways of life. Tolerance and understanding is enhanced, and the student also has an entirely different outlook on his own life and customs. Being motivated to interact with new foreign friends creates a strong reason to diligently continue on with the study of the language. Especially in the Spain programs, it is common to have a high percentage of teens from Europe, in addition to students from the U.S., and this can create interesting roommate combinations.

The intensity of study in small groups creates huge strides in knowledge of Spanish, in comparison with limited classroom time spent in traditional language classes with twenty or more students. In brief, sending a teen to one of our Spanish immersion programs is probably one of the best and most rewarding things that a parent will ever give his child.

In addition to these programs which are open to individual teen students, we often arrange special closed teen groups for specific schools. We have had closed high school groups in Cuernavaca, Seville, Cordoba, Antigua and Heredia, Costa Rica. Please contact us if you are interested in organizing and directing a group. Depending on the size of the group, there is complimentary study and lodging offered to the group leader.  We have a sample list of itineraries and pricing in the Groups section of our website.

Many of our programs are suitable for entire families, and teens often come accompanied by a parent. Special programs have been created for teens who want to come alone or independently. These are programs which we confidently recommend for unaccompanied teens, as they are specially designed for this age group. Programs are supervised, with some more closely than others, good medical care is available, and students live with families or in residences which take responsibility for the teens. However, teen participants must be mature and serious in purpose. None of the programs will have a chaperone constantly in attendance with the teen, so participants must be responsible and carefully follow any advice given by the school. These are not "camps", as all have a serious learning component. They are, however, fun and active, and participants have a wonderful time!

Some students travel with a friend; others who are a bit more independent successfully come alone and quickly make friends. In some programs we have a parent, relative or guardian studying in the regular program at the same time, while the teen participates in the special program. In these cases, we can place the parent and teen with the same family.
