SAN SEBASTIÁN, SPAIN
San Sebastián is a beautiful city with a European feel and a courteous highly-cultured population who speak correct, very clear Spanish. It is much more than a beautiful city with beaches. As the cultural capital of the Basque country it has many events and festivals all year round. It is a very pleasant middle size city (population 180,000) on the northern Spanish "Green Coast", only 20 kilometers from France. It has three beaches, a lively old part, a historical center with pedestrianized streets and neo-classical architecture.
As a center for Spanish culture, the city hosts concerts, festivals and events year round including the International Film Festival, Jazz Festival, classical music and fireworks festivals. Add to this the Basque traditions, sports and fairs, the delicious world-class food, and the friendliness of the people, and you will understand how people easily fall in love with San Sebastián.
The average temperatures in the summer of 72 Fahrenheit, and winter 46 F. There is a second official language in this Basque area, but you will find it will never interfere with your learning of standard Spanish.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
San Sebastián offers endless possibilities to enjoy your free time - lively night life, the Old Part, romantic walks along the beach, the Castle of the Wind Comb, excursions, museums, exhibitions, 40 cinemas, theaters, cultural centers, the Convention Center.
The school organizes intercambio parties, talks and lectures, videos, and international meals. In San Sebastián you can play all kinds of sports such as golf, tennis, and horseback riding. Many surfers are attracted to the waves in Gros, Mundaka and Hossegor.
The Mundaiz Gymnasium, next to the school, offers Lacunza students preferential rates. The Municipal Sports Council is very active, and if you become a member you can get into the sports centers and take part in the courses that it organizes. In summer they run courses in 20 different sports ranging from surfing, canoeing or sailing, to tennis, hang-gliding or climbing. The school organizes sports activities such as football and volleyball matches, horseback rides, bike rides, and excursions to the mountains.
Lacunza also makes the most of the wonderful culture and scenery in the Basque country with excursions to all places of interest such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or Hemingway's Pamplona and the Running of the Bulls.
