About Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is located in the Riviera Maya, an 86 mile corridor, located in the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, better known as the Mexican Caribbean.
All year round you can expect sun and warm weather with an average temperature high of 30°C or 86 °F. It is a marvelous place to spend time. It has all the advantages of a Mexican Caribbean resort - a dazzling, white-sand beach, turquoise sea, a huge range of restaurants and things to see, and yet it has managed to retain a relaxed, low-rise village atmosphere which has nothing in common with the large-scale tourist resorts elsewhere on the coast. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed, and it is the gentle surf that seems to dominate the pace of life.
TRAVEL Fly into Cancún. Airport pickup is available for a fee.
About The School
IH Riviera Maya is part of the prestigious group of International House schools and was opened in 2004. The school is located in the very center of Playa del Carmen, just two blocks from the Caribbean Sea beach and with dozens of bars, restaurants and shops nearby. The school consists of two adjoining buildings: a colonial style house with a domed roof and terrace at the front which houses the reception, two large student apartments and a building at the back that contains the teachers' room, the study room, the Internet access room, offices, the classrooms and two more student apartments. There are 10 spacious classrooms in total, all with air-conditioning and views of the garden. There is also the bar area in the garden where students can relax and socialize after class. Separate from the school buildings themselves, a five-minute walk away is the popular student residence hall .
As a member of the worldwide International House group, the school follows very high standards of instruction, professional integrity and student care, and there are regular inspections to ensure that these standards are maintained. This group has a stellar reputation for training language teachers worldwide.
Style of teaching – All teachers have university degrees and have received specialized training in the teaching of Spanish to foreigners. The method of International House emphasizes conversation, and also incorporates a great deal of class interaction. The goal is to make you comfortable using your new language in the practical situations that you encounter in everyday life such as travel, meeting people and participating in a conversation effectively. With this communicative and dynamic approach, you will rapidly find yourself speaking Spanish. The combination of outstanding teachers and techniques will give you both knowledge and confidence.

Connecting the culture to the language is an important component of your program. There is a regular program of social activities including welcome cocktail parties, conversation exchange evenings with Mexican students studying English, and lectures on different aspects of Mexican and Mayan culture. The school also organizes excursions to some of the region’s most interesting locations such as the ancient Mayan cities of Tulúm and Chichén Itzá, the coral reefs of the island of Cozumel or one of the region’s many superb nature reserves. These are at additional cost, but are kept reasonable. Other activities which can be arranged include diving lessons, golf classes, Mexican cooking courses, and bicycle and car rentals.
