BUENOS AIRES

Buenos Aires, the capital city of more than thirteen million residents, is a sophisticated and cosmopolitan city which boasts a huge variety of cultural and social activities. Its European feel has earned Buenos Aires the name "the Paris of the Americas." Nearly 40 percent of the Argentine population resides in Buenos Aires. Palatial mansions, townhouses, and wide boulevards lend a gracious and old-fashioned air to many areas of the city.

Today, Buenos Aires is a complex city where the cultural flavors, styles, and attitudes of its European roots are still evident. Porteños, as residents of Buenos Aires are known, enjoy a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Music seems to be in the Argentine soul, and the city’s music, theater, and dance scenes are unsurpassed in Latin America. The tango is king in Buenos Aires and is performed in clubs and on the street. Sports enthusiasts enjoy Buenos Aires as well.

The Argentine national soccer team is a two-time world champion, and both young and old play in intramural matches. Pato, the Argentine national sport, and polo are popular with porteños. Some of the best skiing in the world is less than a two hour flight from the city. Summer starts in December and extends to the end of February. Buenos Aires can be very warm during these months with an average temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters (June, July, August) are not very cold in Buenos Aires. The average temperatures vary from 40 - 50 degrees F. In spring, temperatures averages 68 F., and in fall, 59 F.
